  • The Resident Advisor and Bridges For Music charity project to build a music school in Langa, a township outside of Cape Town in South Africa, is in full swing. In 2014 we partnered with Bridges For Music, a non-profit organisation rooted in the belief that music can positively impact underprivileged communities, to cycle from London to Amsterdam. The team of cyclists (a mix of RA staff, music industry folk and DJs like Midland and Giles Smith) completed the 300-mile journey and exceeded the €100,000 fundraising target. Before building can start, there has been plenty of behind-the-scenes work to do: architectural plans and models have been drawn up, a construction company has been brought onboard and the local council has been consulted. Acquiring land in a South African township is a slow process, but a lease has now been granted for the location of the school. The next step is to submit building plans to the council with the aim to start building in September 2015. Bridges For Music has been working closely with the SAE Institute in Cape Town to develop the school's curriculum. Though music will be the central focus, students will also develop transferable skills in marketing, finance and computer literacy in addition to sessions on nutrition, fitness and communication among other things. We'll have more updates on the school in the coming months. To learn more about this project, check out the video below. Anyone who wishes to donate can do so here.
