  • Severed Heads will mount the Better Dead Than Head tour starting on September 18th in San Francisco. Though he started the group in the late '70s, the music Tom Ellard (and a rotating cast of collaborators) created as Severed Heads continues to strike a chord with modern music fans, especially as the obsession with '80s minimal synth music barrels on. San Francisco's Dark Entries label reissued Heads' classic Dead Eyes Open as well as some of bandleader Ellard's solo material last year, and Optimo Trax will release an EP archival recordings, Big Saints Reward (1987 – 90 dubs), next month. Fittingly, the Australia-based Ellard is poised to take the show stateside again. Chicago's Cold Waves festival is organizing the rare tour, which will end with an appearance at the two-day event that also includes Prurient, Justin Broadrick's Godflesh and Lustmord. Prior to that, Ellard's group will be joined by Ministry-related project Cocksure, and they'll do a run throughout the US, hitting SF, LA, Seattle, Austin, New York and Tampa. Back in 2013, RA spoke with Ellard as part of our Exchange series. He detailed his group's improbable course from obscurity to mainstream success and back again. Check out the interview below.
