- The Amsterdam label's next compilation shines light on a little-known figure from NYC's '80s downtown scene.
The next release on Dutch label Music From Memory is a double-LP retrospective of NYC's Vito Ricci.
Ricci was one of the lesser-known cogs in New York's fabled 1980s downtown scene. He dabbled in experimental jazz, electronic music, spoken word and film scores, self-releasing some cassettes and one LP between 1983 and 1985. At the time, most of his music was recorded for experimental theatre and performance-art pieces, and he worked with artists like Peter Zummo, Rashied Ali, Byard Lancaster and Yousef Yancey. Spread across two pieces of wax, I Was Crossing A Bridge takes its name from Ricci's only album, with the label saying the LP touches on "hypnotising ambient, meditative minimal-synth through to dubbed out electronic funk and even leftfield boogie."
I Was Crossing A Bridge is Music From Memory's fourth retrospective, following records from Joan Bibiloni, Gigi Masin and Leon Lowman. Earlier this year it also issued an LP of new material from Gaussian Curve, the trio of Young Marco, Gigi Masin and Jonny Nash.
