  • The first round of acts have been confirmed for MUTEK 2015, running May 27th through 31st in Montréal. In 2014 MUTEK teamed up with Elektra for a one-off collaboration to celebrate both festivals' 15-year anniversaries. This year MUTEK will be going it alone, and, as always, the festival's focus is geared towards live performance. Andy Stott will play solo and as one half of Millie & Andrea with Demdike Stare's Miles Whittaker. Atom™ will also perform twice: once with Tobias. and again with Robin Fox as Double Vision. The other names are Sherwood & Pinch, DBX, John Tejada, James Holden, Kiasmos, Lucy, Rival Consoles, Rrose, Steffi, Pole, Strategy and Session Victim. Boundary, Cobblestone Jazz and Paul Trafford make up the Canadian contingent so far. The festival will take place at Musée d'Aart Contemporain and various other venues in and around Montréal. We caught up with festival director Alain Mongeau this week to find out more about MUTEK 2015:
What changes can we expect from last year's festival? Last year's EM15 was a nice adventure, but it also imposed quite a few compromises. We're happy to refocus on MUTEK, tap back into our own identity this year. For 16 years we've dedicated ourselves to seeking out original creations performed live—a core principle that isn't a change so much as an established distinction amongst the galaxy of festivals out there. So expect a back to the roots MUTEK edition. What about MUTEK 2015 is exciting you most? We're recovering a few of the elements that were part of last year's success. For instance, we're really excited to go back to the Montréal Musée d'Art Contemporain for a second year in a row, but this time with a different set of rooms that will be more spectacular. We're also very happy to come back with a free daytime outdoor stage, which allows the festival to blend in with Montréal's urban experience. And as usual, we're getting excited with the artists being confirmed in this year's program; it's always a long and somewhat complicated process to shape up the festival's trajectory, but by the time we're ready to release the first wave of names, we become more than eager to share our enthusiasm. Since MUTEK is mainly a platform dedicated to live acts, there's always a sense of immediacy and of happening, a need to be there feeling that is built into the festival every single year, capturing the imagination of artists and audiences alike.
