  • Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe & Ariel Kalma's We Know Each Other Somehow will be released on April 14th as part of RVNG Intl.'s FRKWYS series. Kalma's early recordings were recently given a loving retrospective by the same label—An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972-1979) dropped on RVNG late last year. Lowe is a veteran figure in Chicago's post-rock scene, having done time in math-rock band 90 Day Men before focusing on his solo project, Lichens. Lowe is also a regular collaborator with the hypnotic doom band Om and released the Timon Irnok Manta LP under his full name on Type in 2012. Lowe and Kalma initially met in San Francisco, where the former's minimal performance setup, a modular synth housed in a suitcase, put Kalma in mind of his old traveling rig, a Revox tape-delay machine and saxophone. Lowe would eventually travel to Main Arm, Australia, working with Kalma at his home studio, located in a remote coastal area. On We Know Each Other…, the duo's ambient synthesizer journeys are buttressed by field recordings of wind, water and other natural elements, which they refer to as the "collective voice". The six extended jams are accompanied by Sunshine Soup an exploratory documentary on the recordings by Misha Hollenbach and Johann Rashid. Check out album track "Mille Voix" below.
