  • The debut of the International Mystery festival will take place in LA at Jewel's Catch One on January 25th, 2014. Organizers Matt Mondanile and Spencer Clark's respective projects Ducktails and Skaters were once lumped in with the mid-'00s hypnagogic pop movement—a US-based scene which focused on VHS-obsession refracted through ambient synthesizer exploration. International Mystery takes stock of what came of it all, and Mondanile conceived of the festival as a way to stage performances for outré acts who rarely have the opportunity come stateside. Occasional LA resident and PAN signee Rene Hell (AKA Jeff Witscher) is set to headline the festival (his recent releases have been full of abrasive midi sounds). A school of Finnish and Belgian artists are scheduled to join him on the bill, which includes ocean-obsessed new age performer Dolphins Into The Future, homemade synth craftsman Floris Vanhoof and Tomutonttu, a group who have been around long enough to have been associated with a previous wave of Finnish, free-folk psychedelia. California computer musician Madalyn Merkey, who releases music on Mondanile's New Images label, will also play, as will Spencer Clark's new project, the curiously-named Pinhead In Fantasia. Mondanile will split DJ duties with Spencer Clark at the festival, and he told The Wire they'll spin "a mixture of Italo, house, private press, mainstream pop, various stuff… everyone will be dancing.”
