  • Cuckoo Bar in Adelaide has closed with immediate effect. Located on Hindley Street in the north-western corner of Adelaide's CBD, Cuckoo's cosy size, simple layout and Funktion-One soundsystem made it one of the city's best electronic music venues. But a dispute with the building's landlord means the club has now shut—its final party went down on Saturday, November 15th. In addition to a cast of residents and regulars—including The Carter Bros and club owner Phil Rogers, AKA 12'' Phildo—Cuckoo regularly welcomed international guests like Mathew Jonson, Soulphiction, Pépé Bradock, DJ Koze, Frivolous and Tama Sumo. Rogers told RA his most cherished memories of Cuckoo "were the nights where I got to play marathon sets after close, always till the sun came up, and often for nine-plus hours. It would only be a handful of people dancing. These sets to people who were locked into the vibe were unmatchable, when they allowed you to take them wherever you wanted to go." He added: "We are blessed here in Adelaide to have an amazing lineup of local DJs. Every time The Carter Bros had a new release party, they would change minds. Every time HMC entered the building, it was as expected. Our residents have always been solid too, week in, week out, holding it down. Residencies are a tough gig, keeping it fresh on a weekly basis, but they've always made it look easy. Martin, Timmy Carter, Sanjii, Lenny—they've all blown the roof off the place on so many occasions." Photo credit: James Hartley
