  • DJ Marfox, the de facto leader of Lisbon's Afro-Portuguese dance music scene, will play four US dates beginning August 30th. In March, RA's editor Ryan Keeling traveled to Lisbon to examine the social and geographical factors contributing to the rise of the fast, ecstatic music produced by DJ Marfox and his cohort. Since then, Marfox traveled to the states for his debut US gig at the Red Bull Music Academy festival in New York and released the Lucky Punch EP on Lit City Trax. That label, run by J-CUSH, specializes in raw, regional dance scenes, having worked closely with the Teklife crew as footwork gained international traction. In Keeling's piece, Pedro Gomes, one of the founders of Marfox's first label, Príncipe, stated, "I would be sad to see some promoter trying to mutilate this into what it's not. This is not techno, this is not house, this is not dubstep, this is not grime—this is this, it's not anything else." Fittingly, the lineups for the US shows are averse to categorizing the Lisbon producer. He'll begin at MoMA's PS1 Warm Up Series, where he's billed alongside Benji B, Da¯m-Funk, UNO's Dutch E. Germ and more. On September 1st he'll play for Okayafrica and Electrafrique on the roof of Brooklyn club Output. For this day-into-night event, he'll be joined by Electrafrique radio show hosts DJ Cortega, Underdog and Kashaka. Following the New York City shows, he'll play a pair of Lit City Raves in Portland and LA. The Portland night, co-presented by Lit City Trax and Ecstasy, has Marfox performing with Chicago ghetto house legend DJ Deeon as well as DJ Rafael, J-CUSH and Massacooramaan. The latter two will also appear at the LA gig with the addition of Chicago producer RP Boo. Tickets to the Output show are available on RA.
