  • The lineup has been announced for this year's Berlin Atonal, taking place August 20th through 24th. Berlin Atonal first emerged back in the early '80s, providing an important outlet for its home town's experimental artists. After subsequently laying dormant for more than a decade, the festival returned last year, booking close to 50 acts to perform over a week-long period at a disused power station. This year, the festival has been cut down to three days, but, if its first lineup announcement is anything to go by, it'll still be heavy on big names. Debuts make up a big portion of the bill. Peter Van Hoesen and Yves de Mey will play two live sets as Sendai, one of them being the first appearance of the Sendai Sound System. Local techno artist Milton Bradley will unveil his new The End of All Existence live show, while Samuel Kerridge and OAKE come together for their maiden live set as UF. Modern Love's Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott will also bring their Millie & Andrea collaboration to Berlin. The rest of the bill so far comprises mostly experimental and techno artists. Tim Hecker has been billed for a set in the festival's main room, while Swedish techno export Abdulla Rashim will play live. Other experimental acts include Emptyset's James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas, who will DJ at a Subtext Recordings after party they're curating. Seminal drum & bass duo Source Direct have also been tapped for a rare appearance outside the UK. The programme will get underway with a performance from Frankfurt's Ensemble Modern, who'll be playing Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians. The event was originally due to take place in July, but "complex technical issues" meant it was pushed back to August. More names added in the coming weeks.
