  • The fourth Substrata festival will take place in Seattle from July 17th through the 19th. The annual event is curated and managed by local musician Rafael Anton Irisarri (whom you might recognize better under his The Sight Below alias). This year, it'll be produced in collaboration with the nonprofit Nonsequitur and will happen at the Chapel Performance Space, and it's an all-ages event featuring performances, workshops and other activities. In the festival's own words, it's "an immersive weekend experience that engages the audience in a dialog with the artists that goes beyond the constrains of traditional performer/listener interactions." 2014's roster is headed up by Finnish producer Mika Vainio, known for his punishing techno-informed work under his own name and as one half of Pan Sonic. Julia Kent will bring her outré cello experiments, along with Koen Holtkamp (of ambient duo Mountains) and Kompakt affiliate Markus Guentner. Rounding out the lineup are Carl Hultgren from Windy & Carl, Barn Owl's Evan Caminiti, the "alien folk" of Australian Sanso-Xtro and finally Mamiffer, the duo of ISIS founder Aaron Turner and pianist Faith Coloccia. There will also be a special retreat on the Olympic Peninsula on July 20th and 21st (following Substrata proper), and that one will feature Holtkamp and some of the other Substrata artists, with more details to come later. As a relatively small and crowd-funded event, Substrata is asking for donations to help with funding this year.
