  • James Holden and Floating Points are among a group of European musicians in Morocco this week as part of a collaborative project organised by the Dar Al-Ma'Mûn centre for artistic residencies. The week-long residency is taking place from March 24th through 31st as part of the closing week of the fifth Marrakech Biennale. Four European artists—Holden, Floating Points, Biosphere and Vessel—have been working with Moroccan Gnawa musicians Maâlem Mahmoud Guinia and Maâlem Mohamed Koyou. (Gnawa is a religious and spiritual form of music that combines poetry with traditional sounds and dancing.) The artists will split their time between the Dar Al-Ma'Mûn centre in the Fellah Hotel, a boutique hotel nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, and a Marrakech recording space called Studio Agafay. At this stage organisers haven't confirmed whether the results of the sessions will be officially released, though there will be a live Boiler Room stream on March 28th and 29th.
