  • Barraca will close its doors for good on Saturday, March 8th, rounding out its 48-year legacy with one final party. The Valencia nightclub, which first opened in 1966, has long been the city's premier purveyor of electronic music. Last night, via their Facebook page, the beachside venue announced that next weekend's event would be their last. In a more recent post, the reasons for the closure were outlined, citing Spain's "ongoing economic crisis" as the main cause. (A law introduced in 2012 raised the VAT for all cultural outlets from 8 percent to 21 percent, forcing Barraca to raise their ticket prices.) Following a dramatic drop in numbers, the owners had no choice but to call time on the club. "This has been a very hard decision for us to make. We know that Barraca is not just a nightclub, but a space which has hosted multiple generations over the course of its 48-year history," reads a club statement. "For your peace of mind, it is important we inform you that Barraca will neither be demolished nor destroyed. We will not let it deteriorate; it will always be maintained in perfect working condition, ready for the next step." Taking place on Saturday, March 8th, the closing party will feature Dan Ghenacia, Jose De Divina and Rafa Siles, as well as a host of residents. Doors will run from 10 PM until late.
