  • Big Ears Festival 2014 will take place in Knoxville, Tennessee, from March 28th through 30th. The AC Entertainment-produced event took place in Knoxville in 2009 and 2010, but then went missing for three years. Fans should be happy to know that Big Ears' focus on experimental music remains unwavering in its return this year, with three days of events taking over venues across the city's downtown area. Legendary composer Steve Reich tops the bill—his seminal 1976 work Music For 18 Musicians, along with Radio Rewrite, a 2012 composition inspired by a couple of Radiohead songs, will be performed by New York's acclaimed Ensemble Signal. Radiohead's own Jonny Greenwood is also scheduled to perform Reich's Electric Counterpoint. One more Reich piece, 1971's Drumming, will be performed by So Percussion. A few more veteran acts, including Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale, the band Television and Marc Ribot, will drop into town for appearances as well. Stephen O'Malley and Oren Ambarchi will play solo and duo sets, and they'll link up with Keiji Haino, who's also slotted in for a solo set, to perform as Nazoranai. Finnish producer Vladislav Delay and Berlin artist Nils Frahm (who turned in one of our favorite albums of 2013, Spaces) are confirmed, and further highlights include Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never, Julia Holter and Vatican Shadow.
