  • Detroit Electronic Music Festival will return to the Motor City next Independence Day. DEMF, which originally took place on Memorial Day Weekend, was the predecessor to Movement. Local promoter Paxahau took over the financially-flagging festival in 2006, and since then no event has taken place under the DEMF banner (though Movement is colloquially called DEMF by regular festivalgoers). That looks to change next year, as original DEMF founder Carol Marvin prepares to re-launch the brand on Independence Day weekend, according to Real Detroit Weekly. Information is still foggy at this point, but it looks like the new DEMF will take place as a free event (in the spirit of the original) at Detroit's Campus Martius park, and will be an entirely separate entity from Movement Detroit (which will go down May 24th through 26th at Hart Plaza). DEMF coincides with the FEMT (Federation Of Electronic Music Technology) a larger-scale festival taking place at Ford Field the same weekend, which will have lectures, exhibitions and panels in addition to over 60 performers. Juan Atkins (who is the artist program director and associate producer of DEMF and FEMT) will take to the stage with Rik Davis to perform live as Cybotron, but it's unclear whether that will take place at DEMF or FEMT. Other artists are yet to be announced. To get a better idea about the situation, read our in-depth piece from 2010 about Detroit's festival history.
