  • Opal Tapes has announced its newest project, a vinyl offshoot called Black Opal. The UK tape-centric label is one of 2013's breakout stories (which we somewhat presciently predicted with our January Label of the Month feature), finding widespread critical acclaim and dropping over 20 releases this year alone. They've dabbled vinyl already, reissuing some older tapes and brand new material from Shapednoise and Yves De May, but with Black Opal they've now got a dedicated outlet for their adventures in wax. Unlike the no-frills white label style of past releases, Black Opal 12-inches will come with full packaging designed in collaboration with Savage Wolf. Though label head Stephen Bishop said in an interview with Juno Plus that the new imprint will focus on brand new music, the first release is a reissue of New York producer Patricia's Body Issues cassette, a techno-leaning affair that proved to be one of the label's fastest-selling tapes. Future releases on Black Opal will come from alumni HOLOVR, Yves De May and Lumigraph. You can hear clips of the Patricia release over at the label's BandCamp page.
