  • Leftfield Australian bass artist Dro Carey will play his first gig in Europe this Friday night at Blå in Oslo, Norway. It's always a rare opportunity to see Dro Carey play. Though his oddball take on bass music has made him increasingly popular over the past year or so, the Australian artist is held back by his own struggle with depression, as Ryan Keeling found out in his Breaking Through feature on him last year. "Unfortunately, my health issues—migraines, depression—greatly interfere with preparation and performance," he said. "As such, I have been on a bit of a gig hiatus because I do not want to risk letting anyone down, even if I'm feeling OK when they ask." This fact was sadly made real earlier this year when he was forced to cancel nearly half of an Austrlian tour—his first ever in his home country. Dro Carey will be in good company on the night. He'll be joined by Lukid, a UK artist whose off-kilter bass productions have found a consistent home on Werk Discs, the label run by Actress. Also billed is former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos, who will present his audiovisual concept LiveCinema, which pairs electronic classics with edited film clips. The event is part of Ultima, a contemporary arts festival that will present events of all kinds around Oslo from September 6th through the 15th. You can see the full program here.
