- A new album from the techno producer's experimental guise (ADMX-71) takes inspiration from the New York City subway system.
Adam X is ready to release a new album as ADMX-71, his more experimental side project.
Entitled Second System, the record is inspired by a peculiarity of the New York City subway. Most of the subway was built in the early 20th century, before many of New York's neighborhoods were developed. By the '20s and '30s, a number of areas outside the reach of the subway had become well-populated, so city engineers began to devise a "second system" to better connect these neighborhoods—200 miles of tunnels and elevated railways in total. The project was put on hold when World War II began, and eventually shelved altogether in favor of a new automobile infrastructure. This left behind a series of half-finished tunnels and never-used stations sitting alongside the subway system most New Yorkers know.
Adam X discovered these remnants as a youth growing up in New York (he spent a lot of time exploring the subway in the '80s, mostly writing graffiti on train cars). Years before he learned the history of the second system, he'd ask his friends: "Why would this tunnel turn to a dead-end? Why is there an abandoned subway station underneath a pre-existing station that has no logical connection?" He remained fascinated for years, and eventually channeled his memories into the dark and ambient productions that make up his latest LP.
Second System is due out in September on Sonic Groove. It will be available on CD and as a limited edition (300 copies) LP.
