- Negative Time will come out this September on My Favorite Robot.
Jori Hulkkonen will release his first album as Third Culture this September on My Favorite Robot Records.
Hulkonnen's been putting out records steadily for the past 15 years, and worked under more than a dozen pseudonyms along the way. He first appeared as Third Culture earlier this year on My Favorite Robot, the Toronto-based label run by Jared Simms and Voytek Korab (who also use the My Favorite Robot banner for their own productions) plus James Teej. Hulkkonen explains the meaning behind the alias like this:
"A few years back I read a piece about Third Culture. The basic idea was to take hard science, like physics and mathematics and put them with literary humanist faculties, although instead of opposing them, the idea was to try and find the similarities and common ground between them. I instantly recognized that juxtaposition; it's the exact same element I strive to find when I play live shows with all of my vintage hardware. Improvising and creating something unique—a human touch, but using electronical machinery—it was something I just had to explore further."
The upcoming album is called Negative Time. It will be Hulkonnen's 13th full-length overall, and the first on My Favorite Robot. Vocal appearances come from Harri Falck, Olga Kouklaki and Hulkkonen himself (as Jiihoo).
