  • Wax Treatment will host a two-day event at Gretchen this weekend to coincide with Berlin's Karneval der Kulturen. "At Wax Treatment's Africa Special, Western producers, DJs, musicians, label owners, and compilers meet their musical ancestors and cousins from the African motherland of repetitive beats," the promoters explain. The event has all the hallmarks of a typical Wax Treatment party—the Killasan soundsystem, West African and East Caribbean food, and a musical program that explores the African roots of club music—plus panels, videos and label presentations. The first two segments will happen during the day on Saturday and Sunday in Gretchen's new courtyard, with DJ sets from Mark Ainley of Honest Jons and Mark Ernestus of Rhythm & Sound among others, plus live performances from Sabar Session, Jeri-Jeri (an Ernestus-produced Senegalese Mbalax group) and Friedman & Liebezeit (i.e. Burnt Friedman and Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit). At 10:00 PM on Sunday night, the party will carry on inside Gretchen with DJ sets from Appleblim, Shed, DJ Pete and intrepid cratediggers Analog Africa Soundsystem. Shackleton and MMM will play live.
