- The Chicago label has put together a retrospective of two early house labels.
Jerome Derradji's Still Music label will release 122 BPM: The Birth of House Music in late June.
The 3CD/double vinyl compilation collects material from two Chicago labels, Mitchbal and Chicago Connection Records. The Mitchbal imprint was among the first to present music from the likes of Jesse Saunders, K-Alexi and more. Guided by the father/son team of Nemiah Mitchell Jr, better known as Mitchbal, and Vince Lawrence, the label quickly saw the mixing of genres in the early '80s that birthed New Wave. The son, Vince Lawrence, also began to throw parties in the Chicago area, influenced by DJs such as Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. Mitchbal already had experience in running a record label, so the two teamed up to push a sound that listeners were already responding to in the Windy City on dance floors and on radio stations like WBMX—the home to the legendary Hot Mix 5 crew of DJs.
Z Factor's "Fantasy" is the tune that many will know, as it is often regarded as the basis for "On and On," the record widely credited as the first house record ever pressed to wax. Derradji has worked with both father and son to present "Fantasy" alongside other standout Mitchbal and Chicago Connection releases, with extensive sleeve notes and photographs that illustrate what Chicago was like back in the early '80s.
