- The Portishead member's new outfit has an album in the works for Stones Throw.
Portishead member Geoff Barrow has unveiled details for a new project, Quakers, whose debut album will come out this April on Stones Throw.
Barrow is a prolific artist who's had his hand in a number of impressive projects over the years, from helping out with Massive Attack's Blue Lines to supervising the music in Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop 20 years later. Then of course there are his widely loved productions for Portishead, one of the essential trip-hop groups, and the remixes he penned under that name.
Quakers is a hip-hop project of outsized proportions. The self-titled debut album packs in 41 tracks and 35 different guest artists, primarily rappers like Dead Prez, Booty Brown of The Pharcyde and Stones Throw regular Guilty Simpson. The core of the group is Barrow himself (under the name Fuzzface), the Australian DJ Katalyst and Stuart Matthews, a studio engineer for Portishead who was sometimes credited as a band member.
Word of the new album first surfaced this week in The Guardian, who quote Katalyst describing the project like this: "Basically the concept is anyone can download the beats off MySpace, do their raps, send them back to us and if we like it we're going to put it on the record... [It's] a pretty dirty, heavy, kind of lo-fi hip-hop record."
