- Morr Music will release the ambient pop duo's first album in February.
Rafael Anton Irisarri (AKA The Sight Below) has formed a new duo with Benoit Pioulard called Orcas, with an album due out in February.
On their own, both artists try to bridge the gap between pop and the avant-garde. As The Sight Below, Irisarri makes ambient music with an indie rock attitude (his second album, for instance, included an extra-hazy cover of Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades"). Pioulard, meanwhile, weaves field recordings and other found sounds into his singer-songwriter compositions. As Orcas they take a similar tack, combining elements of the traditional pop song structure with ambient electronic production. Like some of Irisarri's solo work, their album takes inspiration from the Pacific Northwest, where both artists live, and more specifically the Orca (more commonly known as the killer whale) which is native to the region. It will come out on the Berlin-based label Morr Music.
