  • Raster-Noton is throwing a 15th anniversary party this Friday night at Berghain. The German experimental label was born in 1996, when Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender's (or Byetone's) Rastermusik merged with Noton.archiv für ton und nichtton, Carsten Nicolai's (i.e. Alva Noto's) project at the time. Each label had a different objective: Rastermusik aimed to explore minimal sound composition while maintaining a pop element, and Noton was a platform for more conceptual works of experimental and non-music. A decade and a half later, Raster-Noton continues to pursue all of these goals at once, both through their often lavishly packaged albums and their visually enhanced live performances. The 15th anniversary party at Berghain is one of several the label has put on around Europe. The three founders share the lineup with some of Raster-Noton's most celebrated acts, including Kangding Ray, Atom TM (AKA Uwe Schmidt) and recent addition Vladislav Delay, who will release his first album though the label later this month. All of the 11 artists on the bill will play live, except for Mute Records founder Daniel Miller, who will DJ.
