  • Closing party fever was in full effect at We Love last Sunday as the promoters packed out Space for their biggest party of the year. We Love have built their brand by offering an unprecedented variety of sounds, and this event was no different, highlighted in no greater way than the appearance of Aphex Twin in the Discoteca. Walking into his gig halfway through is perhaps not the best way to make judgement, but it was as eclectic and non-conforming as it was overwhelming. More obvious choices like Fatboy Slim and 2ManyDjs saw the Terraza absolutely heaving, but Clive Henry and Alex Arnout in the Red Box, Rob da Bank on the Sunset Terrace, Tirk Records in El Salon and Ian Blevins on the Premier Étage all had healthy crowds simultaneously as well. In short, it was packed. We'll be exploring We Love's season with promoter Mark Broadbent soon, but suffice to say no other party faces—or sets their own—challenges quite in the same way as We Love. Cocoon's closing followed the next night. In what has become nothing short of a monumental party, Amnesia was again packed to the rafters for the all-star line-up that saw Cocoon pin-up Loco Dice play his only main room gig of the summer in warm-up for Sven Vath, with a Maetrik set thrown into the mix as well. On the terrace, Ricardo Villalobos was joined by Raresh, Onur Ozer and Tobi Neumann with the whole thing going to an unprecedented midday finish, with Ricardo and Raresh playing back-to-back. Later, at the after party—which almost threatens to supersede the main event—Major General Papa Sven played for nearly 12 hours from the beach booth at the Playa D'en Bossa location. (It's well known and totally accessible, but let's at least attempt to keep its confidentiality a while longer.) Just last night, Space's flagship in-house night Kehakuma ended with a large and buoyant crowd. No doubt the presence of Jamie Jones on the Terraza played some part in this, but the Oriental-themed party has garnered the respect its line-ups deserve, attracting a definite island and industry crowd throughout the summer. It's also responsible for showcasing some of the newest talent to Ibiza. (Maya Jane Coles is just the most obvious example.) The Terraza closed with a back-to-back houseathon from Nick Curly and Mathias Kaden, a pairing you're likely to see more in the near future, and Fabric's Sunday promoter WetYourself! again participated by hosting the Discoteca with Minilogue and Terence Fixmer. The party showed no signs of the slightly apathetic crowd that has sometimes been a thorn in its side over the last couple of years. The challenge remains to ensure the booking policy continues, while keeping the party atmosphere that other underground nights in Ibiza seem to naturally engender. At this time of year, the parties come thick and fast and in next week's final RA Ibiza Weekly, we'll be rounding up the action from all the major closings, including, Space, Ushuaia, Amnesia and the much anticipated Circoloco Closing at DC10.
