Macro will release its first label compilation this September, entitled Macrospective.
Founded five years ago by Finn Johannsen and Stefan Goldmann, Macro is a Berlin-based techno label with taste for the avant-garde. Though their records are mostly club-friendly, they always find a way to push the envelope, whether by means of a skeletal Ricardo Villalobos remix or, in the case of Goldmann's latest album, a cluster of 144 locked grooves in varying time signatures.
Macrospective has its experimental side as well. Like many label compilations, it surveys the back catalog across two discs, each mixed by one of the label's founders. The twist is that both mixes use the same set of tracks, albeit in very different ways. Johannsen's mix is an off-the-cuff affair, done in one take, while Goldmann takes a more calculated approach, carefully crafting an 80-minute composition. Both are done using vinyl only.
