- Selected by Dave Nada, the second Blow Your Head compilation shows where Dutch house and reggaeton meet.
The second edition of Mad Decent's Blow Your Head series focuses entirely on the new genre known as Moombahton.
Moombahton is most easily described as a blend of reggaeton and Dutch house. The style came into being roughly a year ago, largely thanks to the DC and Baltimore-based DJ Dave Nada, who traces its creation back to a single party. He was DJing, and realized he was the "only adult standing around a bunch of drunk ass high school Latino kids wildin' out to reggeaton in a basement." He didn't have any reggaeton with him, but he didn't want to empty the dance floor, so he he decided to play Afrojack's remix of "Moombah" by Chuckie and Silvio Ecomo. "I thought it kinda sounded like fast reggaeton anyway, and damn was I right! Next thing I know the entire room went mental." The rest is history.
The artist Uproot Andy explains moombahton's cultural backbone this way: "When reggaeton left the islands and reached Europe, the Dutch sped it up and called it 'bubblin' which led to all the Dutch house stuff. Time goes by, and then you slowed it back down after it got 'housed' by Europe. So with moombahton, it all comes back full circle in a brand new light."
Blow Your Head Vol.2 features many of moombahton's essential tracks, plus a few previously unreleased cuts by some of the genre's core artists, like Munchi, Nadastrom and Dillon Francis. It comes a year after the first Blow Your Head, a dubstep compilation selected by label boss Diplo.
