  • Next bank holiday weekend, 2020 Vision will cover a full 20-hour period with two back-to-back parties, the first of which takes place at a new outdoor venue, Shoreditch Underground. Located in the former Shoreditch station, the terrace-style venue fits 750 revelers and is equipped with Funktion One sound. It will run for 12 hours at a time, from 10:00AM to 10:00PM, and will host a total of 12 parties this summer. So far just one party has taken place there–a daytime party this past May 1st with Radio Slave and Nina Kraviz. The daytime portion of 2020 Vision's 20-hour bash will feature sets from label boss Ralph Lawson and Steve Bug, head of Berlin's Poker Flat imprint (and the man behind this week's RA Podcast). Local artists jozif and Danny Raper will man the decks as well. By the time the party finishes at 10:00, a 12-hour warehouse party will have already begun over at Village Underground. That one features Ewan Pearson, Maya Jane Coles and Mark E, plus Lawson, jozif and Raper (everyone who was meant to play the canceled event from earlier this year). Late last week, we caught up with Raper and Laurence Daw, the owner of Shoreditch Underground, to talk about what sets the new venue apart:
How did you first hear about the space? Laurence: I read an article about the place going to auction, I thought this would be the perfect contribution to improving public transport in London. You walk into Shoreditch station expecting to get on the next congested train to Liverpool Street, but instead the unassuming passenger gets lost in a euphoric sense of musical paradise. It worked. What are the key things that make this space unique? Laurence: Location Location Location. Set within arguably the most culturally enriched area on the globe, it's far too easy to see how special both the venue and location really is. Danny: A combination of factors, really. Obviously it's steeped in history with it being the former Shoreditch rail and tube station, and retains a lot of its original features, such as the ticket booths and signage, but the fact that it's outside and running under the heart of Brick Lane gives it a real cultured feel. It instantly reminded me of the way South American venues are designed. Take Warung Beach Club in Florionopolis, Brazil for example, where the sun starts at one end of the space, before reaching the other: in the same way, at Shoreditch Underground the sun emerges the east end of the terrace (a cascade of steps which lead onto the terrace) from around midday until around 5 PM, before orbiting over Brick Lane and then hitting the far end of the terrace and slowly engulfing the crowd metre by metre before hitting the back wall. The sound funnels perfectly through the space, but really there are so many elements that it's too hard to answer this question without experiencing it for yourself. And obviously when night falls and the club lighting kicks in, it just enhances your senses further. In summary, it feels like a very, very special place. Oh, and the trains fly past every couple of minutes, similar to how the planes fly over Ibiza's DC-10, except planes don't honk their horns to the crowds! What can you tell us about the future lineups? Danny: We want to keep the future lineups close to our chest, and will be announcing them one by one in the run up to each event. Bearing in mind we've already had Nina Kraviz, Radio Slave, Ralph Lawson, jozif and Steve Bug at just the first two parties, you can expect more of the same over the coming months. The bar has been set, and we won't slouch below it. One event we're particularly excited about though is a "Queens of the Underground" party... we'll leave the lineup fathering-out for that one to you!
Tickets to both of 2020 Vision's bank holiday parties are available here on RA.
