  • On the 12th, 13th and 14th of May, a smattering of Raster-Noton and Mute artists will play at The Roundhouse for this year's Short Circuit Festival. Raster-Noton will celebrate fifteen years in existence by kicking off the festival on Thursday the 12th of May with Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Although the pair have often worked together in the past, this will be their first time showcasing their latest collaborative material. While Sakamoto is a classically trained musician from Japan whose collaborations over the years have included Bowie, Iggy pop and Robbie Robertson, Raster-Noton boss Alva Noto has always been a champion of uncompromisingly avant-garde electronic music. Other artists on the Thursday include Anne James Chaton, Grischa Lichtenberger, Uwe Schmidt as Atom TM, Byetone and Mark Fell of SND. Mute takes care of proceedings for Friday and Saturday. Headlining the former is Recoil, an experimental project by former Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder. The night's electronic contingent includes minimal icon Richie Hawtin, along with Thomas Fehlmann, Thomas Brinkmann and Pole, plus industrial pioneers Nitzer Ebb. Label founder Daniel Miller will DJ, as will veteran superstar Moby. Saturday is more devoted to left field rock, with sets from Liars, Laibach and The Residents among others. As usual with Short Circuit, music isn't the only thing on offer. There will also be film screenings, art installations and talks, including "An Introduction to the Science of Mastering" by Stefan Betke, AKA Pole.
