  • This May, Smalltown Supersound will release the first album by Norwegian duo Pechenga, entitled Helt Borte. Pechenga is Rune Lindbaek and Cato Farstad, two artists who hail from the small fishing village of Vardo. The former has lived in the far north for most of his life, the latter has spent years in Oslo and Berlin, producing remixes for the the likes of Idjut Boys, Lindstrom and The Knife. Drawn together by a shared love for ambient music and prog rock, the duo teamed up as Pechenga in 2007, taking their name from a region of Siberia that's visible from their hometown. Helt Borte, which in Norwegian could mean either "completely gone" or "hero is gone," was composed at Linbaek's grandmother's house in Vardø over a two-week period, supposedly with heavy snow and the aurora borealis as a backdrop. Pechenga name Stars of the Lid, Peter Namlook and Brian Eno as some of their primary influences during this time. The album originally came out in 2008 on Pechenga Records, but sold less than 100 copies before being picked up by Smalltown Supersound. Artwork is by the musician and graphic designer Kim Hiorthoy.
