  • For their one-year anniversary, The Dog & Pony show will throw a day party this weekend featuring Alexander Robotnick and Le loup. Robotnick has been involved in music for almost three decades, jumping across styles with his world music and soundtrack productions before returning to his italo-disco roots. His live set will headline the night. Also on the bill is young Parisian DJ Le Loup, whose music has been released on house labels like Wolf + Lamb and Esperanza. Leading the way to the dance floor, as usual, is the pair of happy animals that are the event's namesake. RA caught up with Dog & Pony's Paul Raffaele via email to talk about what fans can expect in 2011, and to reveal one especially magical memory:
Can you tell us about the motivation and the mission (and the animals) behind The Dog & Pony Show? Without trying to sound cliché, it's pretty simple: Great music, cool venues, cool people. The animals are the stars of the show, they're such attention whores! They're the front men and appear on every flyer, in every episode, in different scenarios & funny situations. My partner Dave Kers & I are just the number crunchers, they run the show. Celebrities are so high maintenance! The parties have taken place on different days and at different venues. Is that by design, or did it just happen that way? By design. We're always on the lookout for better, more interesting spaces. After a year of throwing parties, is there one event, or one set, that stands out as particularly memorable? In an interview, Matt Tolfrey was asked "If you could work or collaborate with anyone in the world right now, who would it be and why?", and he chose Matthew Dear. We had the honor of sparking their friendship with back to back set times which led to a magical 3 hour tag team set at our last party. They just clicked, and the rest was musical bliss ... that we just so happened to capture! (muhuhuah) Look for it in the coming weeks on our forthcoming podcast. Let's hope they make some records together in the future! The top of the bill for the upcoming anniversary party features an interesting contrast of old and new talent: Alexander Robotnick and Le Loup. Tell us a bit about how these musicians fit into the booking policy you've developed over the past year. Our whole lineup for the Anniversary is a pretty good realization of our initial goal for this party. We wanted to have new talent, veterans, local guys and guys from overseas, some great producers, some just great DJs. It's a delicate balance between the producers that I'm charting, who we're meeting and chatting with at the moment, and what we know will work in our market. We've got our podcast launching this Monday, the 28th. It'll be an hour curated by me, and an hour from a guest, we'll be pulling in guests from all the genres we care to listen to or are inspired by, and will serve as another outlet that we can entertain DJs and producers we love. What do you have planned for The Dog and Pony Show in the coming year? We've got some really exciting bookings for the spring and summer that we're working on! Most we can't announce yet, but we can say that you can expect visits from Catz & Dogz, Glimpse (Live), Simon Baker & we're very honored to be presenting The 15 Years of Mood Music Showcase. Stay tuned for all the juicy details!
