  • Carsten Nicolai (AKA Alva Noto) and Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda will release an album next month as Cyclo., entitled id. The two experimental producers share a fascination with sound-based images, a topic their Cyclo. project is committed to exploring. The basic idea is this: they produce music not for how it sounds, but rather for the images it creates when analyzed with stereo graphic equipment. As the label puts it, "audio elements are constructed through the minute editing of frequencies (often beyond the physical range of human hearing) and selected by the artists for their visual characteristics." Nicolai and Ikeda first embarked on the project about a decade ago, releasing one album through Raster-Noton in 2001. They've been building up a database of these audio sketches ever since, 11 of which make up the tracklist on the new album. According to a press release, id was left un-mastered so as not to interfere with how the waveforms look through an "XY phase scope." If you happen to have one of those bad boys laying around at home, make sure not to convert the files to mp3s—apparently that throws off the images too. The album will be available next month on CD and a limited edition 12-inch.
