  • Later this winter, New York label Rvng Intl. will re-release Harald Grosskopf's debut album Synthesist, complete with a collection of covers by contemporary artists, aptly titled Re-Synthesist. During his heyday in the 1970s, Grosskopf played percussion for some of the most important bands in kraut rock, including the likes of Ash Ra Tempel and Klaus Schulze. In the summer of 1979, he decided to record his first solo work, so he holed up in a rickety home studio out in the West German countryside with a MiniMoog and Revox Reel-to-Reel. The result was Synthesist, a melodic, jam-based and very spaced out record that remains a favorite among electronic artists today. The new re-issue features re-mastered versions of the eight original tracks, alongside a compilation of homages and interpretations from new artists. Entitled Re-Synthesist, the latter disc shows where Grosskopf's influence lies today: psychedelic drone acts like Oneohtrix Point Never, cosmic disco artists like ARP, and lovers of obscure gems such as Optimo's JD Twitch. The deluxe package also comes with liner notes in German and English written by Grosskopf himself. Check out an excerpt of the title track below, complete with animation from video artist and yo-yo champion Sid Seed. Tracklist Synthesist 01. So Weit, So Gut 02. B. Aldrian 03. Emphasis 04.
