  • WMC hits Miami, earlier than expected image
  • Dates have been announced for the 2011 Miami Winter Music Conference: March 8th through March 12th, two weeks earlier than expected. The new dates may not seem too important at face value, but they threaten to disrupt the conference's usual chemistry. For instance, by now many promoters will have already locked down artists and venues for the last weekend in March, when the WMC has historically taken place, and many more will have arranged flights and hotel reservations. Perhaps most importantly, the three-day Ultra Music Festival, normally a cornerstone of WMC, is already selling tickets for the 25th through the 27th of March, two weeks after the conference officially ends. Numerous artists have already voiced their upset over the new dates on Twitter, including Swedish House Mafia Member Steve Angello, who wrote "If you want to experience all the good parties in Miami, don't go on March 8-12," then later "Will the real WMC please stand up !!!" A press release sent out last night by WMC's organizers offers no explanation for this change in plans. The conference has also moved to a new venue this year: the Miami Beach Convention Center, just a few minutes walk from South Beach's most vibrant stretch. This is a much more central spot than either the Eden Roc Hotel or the Miami Beach Resort and Spa, WMC's previous venues, both of which are located a cab ride away from most of the conference's goings on. More information on WMC and the Ultra Music Festival will be posted here as soon as it becomes available. Update / WMC released a statement last night claiming that Ultra Music Festival's choice of dates breaks a contract between the two parties. According to WMC, the contract stipulated that "the 2011 Ultra Music Festival would be presented during the five-day period in February, March or April 2011 designated and promoted by WMC as the 'WMC week.'" In other words, Ultra Music Festival was obligated to schedule their events to coincide with WMC. The organizers go on to say that "date selection is based exclusively on venue availability" and that they were "blindsided" by Ultra Music Festival's choice of dates. Update / Ultra Music Festival have responded with their own statement, which breaks down the dilemma like this: WMC couldn't book a hotel for the end of March, and Ultra Music Festival isn't allowed to coincide with the Calle Ocho street fair, so the two parties just couldn't work it out this year. Read the whole thing over on Ultra Music Festival's official site. This story was last updated at 9:30am GMT on November 19th, 1010.
