  • Tokyo-based DJ and producer YOSA will touch down in Germany this winter for his first ever tour across Europe. The 22-year-old Drumpoet Community artist is a fixture of Tokyo's club scene, but hasn't broken through to the European circuit until now. He'll use his first continental jaunt to flex his DJ muscles as well as showcase his live performance. The tour's only confirmed stops as of yet are in Munich and Switzerland, though more dates are likely to be confirmed in the weeks ahead, including gigs in London, Bucharest, Berlin and Poland to name a few. Chatting via email earlier this week, Yosa filled us in on his background, the scene in Tokyo, and what new material he's got in the pipeline:
What have you been up to recently? I had been pretty busy doing remixes for various labels, but now it's done. So I started working on original tracks for a new EP. At the moment I have many musical ideas, so it's gonna be massive! You became a DJ/producer after spending time in France and England, were they big inspirations for you? When I was in high school, I spent two years in France, and one year in England. France was cool, but the days I spent in England changed my life. I'd been living in dormitory of the school in London, the school which the Chemical Brothers graduated from. The guy living next to me had turntables in his room, and it was the first time that I touched DJ gear. We talked a lot about music and listened to especially hip hop like J Dilla, Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, etc. That experience is still inspirational to me today. After graduation, I came back to Japan and got turntables and a synthesizer, and started my career as a DJ/Producer. What's the scene like where you're living at the moment? There is actually a good scene in Tokyo. Artists like Ryo Murakami (Poker Flat/Dessous), Kez YM(Yore), Stereociti (mojuba),So Inagawa (Tsuba) etc, are all from Tokyo. But still, there are just a few artists who really turn their eyes to the worldwide scene. There are many Japanese talented artists indeed, but most of them are buried in the local scene. I hope more and more Japanese artists will become active in the front lines of this scene in the world. What are you up to next? My remix for Marsmobil will be out on Compost Black Label with a remix from my hero Henrik Schwarz. I listened to his remix yesterday, and it was amazing as always. And about my remix, I got the inspiration from the pop taste of Dixon's mix Temporary Secretary. While I was making it, I imagined that Dixon would play this in his mix. And of course my DJ/Live tour in Europe this February.
