  • This weekend, Mighty will host the next edition of Get Weird, Lee Burridge's quasi-annual party in San Francisco. Every year since 2005, Burridge has hosted a pre-party for Lovevolution (AKA Love Parade, Lovefest), be it Lovelee, Get Weird or in last year's case, Tyrant. This weekend's bash has already faced some unexpected challenges; first Lovevolution was called off, then Panorama Bar resident Cassy canceled her guest appearance due to complications with her work visa, a story that's become all too common with stateside club parties. But Burridge and company are determined to carry on with a characteristically wacky party this Friday night. We recently caught up with the UK jock via email to chat about Get Weird, Burning Man, and San Francisco's scene in general:
You're no stranger to Get Weird. What do you think is special about this particular party? You're right. It's my party! What makes it special is the extra effort everyone puts in. There is somewhat of a Burning Man sentiment to the idea of the night with people adding there own touches to each event. Dressing up crazy, bringing along strange objects and general weird sights on the dance floor (giant six foot lobster anyone??) or that seem to pop up all over the club through the evening. Also the effort listed and myself put in to giving a little more than a DJ standing on the stage playing music adds to the overall fun. What are your thoughts on Lovevolution's cancellation this year? It's sad as this event has been trouble free (as with most electronic music events) each and every year. Dance music seems, once again, to have attracted the attention of the authorities. Obviously the tragic events at Germany's Love Parade and the death of a minor in LA have left certain people nervous. The event in San Francisco has proven itself each and every year (as with 99.9% of all electronic music parties) to be extremely safe and well run. It's really a shame it can't happen this year but, hopefully, this is just a short term thing. It's not going to damage the following of the event to take one year off. There will still be plenty of cool parties happening in the clubs of SF over that weekend. How do you feel things have been going in general in San Francisco's club scene as of late? I've not really been there much but from what i see and the people I talk to it's good. Diverse and solid. I think the underground scene got clamped down on by someone running for office so that's a little more on the backburner right now but people are still going out and enjoying SF's excellent local talent as well as all the visiting DJ's. I always love it when I play in SF. The energy and people are always very special. What was your favorite moment from Burning Man this year? Wow. There were way too much to even try to consider one single moment this year. The giant wire female sculpture captivated me so much I had to ride out and see her at all times of the day and night. The robot heart bus party with myself, Cassy, Mike Khoury, Nikita, Hoj and Jeff Allen was one of my favorite night, sunrise and day parties in the last 26 years. The temple burn where I was very moved by the reverence everyone seemed to pay this burn. Oh, and losing my bike (well, having it stolen to be precise) on Thursday night and then on Monday while on my way off the playa (a four-and-a-half hour crawl) I had an epiphany that I was going to get it back. I walked about a mile up the line of cars and RVs and saw it on the roof of a car (headed for Dallas). I asked very nicely if i could have it back (while enduring tales of how it mysteriously had turned up in the guys camp on Thursday...uh huh..) and then rode triumphantly (much to the disbelief of my friends) back to my vehicle. Sweet! How very Burning Man!!
Cassy intends to play a make-up date in San Francisco at the next installment Get Weird, though specifics on that event are still forthcoming. Tickets to this weekend's party can be had right here on RA.
