  • New York-based producer Prince Language – known to his landlord as Joshua Taylor – will play two Australian dates over the coming weekend, stopping in for sets in Brisbane and Sydney. Since moving to the city from Chicago in the late '90s, Taylor become a kind of cult figure in New York's disco circles. Production-wise, he's completed remixes for some of New York's most well known acts, and is able to list Juan MacLean, James Murphy and The Rapture as happy clients. Over the years, Taylor has also established Editions Disco as an increasingly popular edits label, hosting releases from an array of familiar disco names. To find out what he's been up to lately, we recently caught up with Taylor over e-mail.
Over the weekend you played your first Australian party in Melbourne. How did it go? It was great! I played alongside my good friend and fellow New Yorker DJ Spun until 8:30 in the morning. Over the course of the night, one of the owners of the club lost his pants and put on a cape. What more can I say? You've lived in New York since 1999. With regard to dance music, how have you seen the city change? Disco seems to have regained a particularly strong foothold. Things have changed pretty drastically since I've lived in NYC. When I first arrived, there were great parties every night, and a ton of great clubs to go to, but it was tough to hear a diverse selection of music over the course of the night. There are way fewer parties now, and you can count the number of good clubs on one hand. However, there are still jams that go off, and when they do they kick the ass of parties anywhere else in the world. And there's more good music coming out of NYC now than in any time I can remember previously. As for disco - it never really died in New York City. The kids have just re-discovered it, and that's really helped keep dance music healthy and thriving in the city. Do you get back to Chicago often? Not as much as I'd like to, especially since my parents are still living there. I was just there a few months ago playing with Ron Trent and Terry Hunter, though. I'd love to see the dance scene get up a little bit more there. People like Leonard Part Six and Sadar are doing great stuff. What's the situation with the Negroclash parties? Are there any plans for more reunions? Still going! It's a little tough coordinating all three of our schedules to be able to do the parties, but they are always great fun. We've done one party this year, and hopefully can do a few more before the year's out. What's coming up on Editions Disco? Next up is the Italo disco/chillwave crossover monster "I Washed You". You can check it out on the tail end of my recent mix for Fabric here. We see you have a remix for Grizzly Bear on the way. How do you find remixing bands, as opposed to remixing house track and doing edits? It really depends on the original song. In some cases, I really try to respect the original parts of a track and do what is almost an 80s-style Francois K/Shep Pettibone 12-inch mix, and in other cases I will pretty much do a whole new track. But I really think that producers shouldn't forget about the former approach. Why waste good parts? I've maybe been spoiled by some of the bands I've done work for. Regardless, I never go into a remix or edit with too many preconceived ideas - ultimately, I try to let the track itself dictate the outcome. Finally, what's on the agenda for the rest of 2010? More touring? Yep! Upcoming dates in Canada in July to start with. Hopefully I'll have a little more time off in NY to spend some longer stretches in the studio to get some more of my own music finished, as well as some interesting remix projects for Stones Throw records that I'll be finishing up soon. And hopefully some summertime fun in the city.
