- The 80's synthpop pioneers have a new album in the pipeline.
UK-based synthpop group OMD have announced plans for a new album, History of Modern, slated for release this fall on 100% Records.
Throughout their heyday in the 1980s, OMD championed a style of keyboard-heavy, atmospheric pop music, as heard on early records like Architecture and Morality and singles like "Enola Gay." Countless musicians today name the band as an influence, including everyone from Terre Thaemlitz to James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. Though they stayed together with varying lineups throughout the past two decades, the group have not released an album since 1996, making History of Modern their first full-length in 14 years.
The new record will be available in five different formats: CD, deluxe CD, double-LP, digital and box set, all of which will feature artwork by Peter Saville, the man behind famous sleeve designs for OMD, Joy Division and Roxy Music. Commenting on their new material, OMD say: "We have really enjoyed making something that we think sounds incredibly current, but is also some of the sound that we delighted in creating, and inventing 30 years ago."
