  • Canadian duo Art Department will headline the first London edition of Bedlam next month at a warehouse venue in Shoreditch. Since the summer of 2009, Bedlam has thrown intimate parties in a Napoleanic fortress in Kent, with past guests like Cassy, M.A.N.D.Y. and Martin Buttrich. The series is hosted by local tech house export Tim Green, who rose to prominence thanks to releases on Get Physical and Cocoon among others (some under the moniker TG). The party next month will be the series' first edition outside of Kent, and will feature Green and Cadenza artist Pablo Cahn on the decks in addition to Art Department. Chatting via email last week, Green told us about his decision to expand the party beyond his hometown.
Tell us about the Bedlam parties in Kent. What gives them their special vibe? Firstly it's an area that doesn't always get to see a lot of good music and artists pass through. So everyone is really appreciative and excited to be at the party. So I really get the feeling that everyone is there for the right reasons. Also we hold the parties in a Napoleonic Fortress which really is an astonishing venue, and it really makes the atmosphere special. What are some of the challenges involved in throwing a party in London, as opposed to a smaller scene like your hometown? Well for me it's definitely the incredible competition. I think there are some amazing parties in London, all different in their own ways. So I suppose I'd like to be able to create our own identity and direction to stand out, but not be in direct competition with the other great nights. Also it takes time to establish a night in a new area. In Kent we are established now, but in London we are not, so it's a whole new challenge of proving ourselves. However I'm really looking forward to this as I know the team we have in place and the plans we have mean these are gonna be wicked nights. What's next for you? At the moment I'm working in the studio on some more releases for this year. Some tracks are finished and I'm really happy with them! I'm also working on my debut album, which I've been working on for ages, but am really pleased with how its progressing. Also lots more gigs in Europe, Australia, South America, North America, so will be touring a lot. I'm playing several parties at WMC this year also, which is my first time at the conference, so am looking forward to that.
