  • Producer and music writer Frank Tope once defined Balearic music quite simply as "pop music that sounds good on pills." While that description may not ring true for everyone, it does capture the feel of Down to the Sea and Back, a new compilation on a new label, Wonk. Comprising 12 breezy pop and disco tunes by artists like Fern Kinney, Al Usher and The San Sebastian Strings, Down to the Sea and Back is not a history lesson in Balearic so much as an open-ended interpretation of the genre. It's compiled by Balearic Mike and Kelvin Andrews, two producers with interesting credentials: the former is a member of house remix crew LuvDup and works at Manchester's Vinyl Exchange, while the latter is a former member of Candy Flip, the group responsible for a 1989 blissed-out cover of "Strawberry Fields Forever", which hit #3 on the UK charts (he's also done studio work for Robbie Williams, "in his spare time"). On Down to the Sea and Back, the duo select 12 tracks that, to them, embody the laid back vibes of Ibiza, Majorca, Minorca and the like. The collection will be the first release on Wonk, an independent label based in the UK. Tracklist 01. The San Sebastian Strings - The Gypsy Camp 02. Fern Kinney - Baby, Let Me Kiss You 03.
