- The Bristol-based MC, producer and DJ has recorded the first volume in his label's mix series.
HENCH boss Jakes will release his first ever mix CD in May.
The label—the name of which is an acronym for "Hard Earned Never Caught Hustling"—has been a vehicle for the harder and more wobbly edge of the Bristol sound since '07, accompanied with a regular series of club nights in the city. Unfortunately, its regular home of The Tube closed down earlier this year, but fans will soon be able to sample the label's trademark sound in CD format. Jakes rose up through the ranks as an MC in the drum & bass scene, accompanying Pendulum as their regular tour vocalist, but since getting into producing solo, he's kept his focus firmly on dubstep.
He's proved himself to be quite the prolific figure, and HENCH Mixtape Vol.1 only serves to enforce the point, with twenty of the compilation's thirty-two tracks being produced by the man himself. As you should expect from the amount of material included, Jakes favours a quick mixing style for the majority of the CD, going for a high-octane vibe with plenty of speaker-busting bass drops. Fellow HENCH producers Komonazmuk, Mensah, Chasing Shadows, Eddie K, Tek-One, Lost and Giant also contribute tracks, while Jakes has also included plenty of his own special VIP mixes to satisfy hardened HENCH followers.
