  • The Short Circuit festival will take over The Roundhouse in London next month for four nights of electronic entertainment. Things kick off on Thursday 14th May with a rare performance from Can co-founder and Krautrock legend Holger Czukay. An ex-student of Karlheinz Stockhausen, Czukay is no stranger to experimental electronics, with his solo and collaborative works during the '80s pushing the boundaries of the technology of the time. Using both video and audio, his performance at The Roundhouse will attempt to showcase all of the phases of his work, and will feature a homage to Stockhausen as well as previously unheard Can material, while Moderat, Jeff Mills and Erol Alkan will all play at Friday's A Taste of Sónar event on Friday night. Saturday and Sunday's events look like much more restrained affairs: The highly regarded Touch label will host performances from Biosphere, Hildur Gudnadottir and BJ Nilsen on Saturday, but the real highlight of the night will be a special performance of The Sinking Of The Titanic by composer Gavin Bryars and avant-turntablist Philip Jeck. Originally written in 1969, the piece was Bryars' first major work, but the duo will recreate their updated version which was released by Touch in 2008. The final Short Circuit event on the Sunday is entirely focused on the work done by the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop. Electro queen Andrea Parker will remix archived material by now-deceased Workshop member Daphne Oram as an opener before a live performance from four ex-members of the Radiophonic Workshop. The last time the quartet performed together was back in 2002 when they created a soundtrack for "Generic Sci Fi Quarry," but their show next month has a much more open agenda, promising to "explore Radiophonic's past, present, and future."
