| #15 / Thu, 26 Feb 09 15:02 It's just you.
In what way is it selling it's soul?
The same as every year they book acts that cover a wide spectrum of whats on offer from the world of electronic music.
This is only a tiny part of the line-up and already there's a bit of something for everyone surely?

the attraction to sonar for me from it's earlier years(my first being 2003) was how it used to pride itself on experimental artists and sounds - their wasn't any other festival which brought together the producers, labels and bands which were really pushing the envelope- probably the most underground of all the festivals. maybe "selling its soul" might be a bit harsh, but for me, i do think its lost a lot of its personality. went last year, and altho it unquestionably housed the most impressive sound rig i've experienced, and i had a fucking mythical shake down- i coulda caught majority of those artists at pretty much any other festival schedueld for the year.
dunno buddy, it just seems like a global gathering to me, nothing that special about it besides that incredible city.
and....as far as it having a "little bit for eveybody"....til now, none of these artists do anything for me, and i consider myself having a fairly broad music taste.
|
| |
 |
| #19 / Thu, 26 Feb 09 19:12 Comparing Sonar to a Global Gathering is utter madness in my opinion. No similarity whatsoever.
Again, people are jumping to conclusions after the first announcement.
Same shit every year. I'm confident that by the time the full line-up is released you'll struggle to find a more experimental, varied, open minded line-up anywhere.

New user Posts / 6 RA Since / Mar 2007 Location / Berlin | #25 / Tue, 03 Mar 09 13:13 I'm agree, totally boring. I went to Sonar around 3 years ago and I promised to myself to don't go any more to Barcelona in that period of the year. The Sonar organization has an arrangement with the government of Barcelona to try to cancel every alternative party during the festival. The discount flyers for the rest of the clubs are not valid during that weekend, at the entrance they tell you: 'No, during the sonar weekend these flyers are not valid' . The free buses that are supposedly organized by sonar they don't respect the time lines and if you have luck to get one in the middle of the night, they cut their routes in the middle of a lost place and of course...coincidently many taxis are waiting for you there. It is a mirror of the repressive and materialist politic of Sonar and their contacts at high levels. And by the way..the public services have a very bad attitude with the tourists who doesn't speak spanish, they're not able to understand that these tourists are helping to pay their salary. I know perfectly what I'm telling you, I'm a Spanish native speaker, and I saw many disgusting situations in relation with this. Going back to the main issue....All aorund this weekend is prepared to literally ''rob'' your many, all cost the double price, all is about police repression and seeing how the people who cannot afford the expensive entrance to the Sonar cannot enjoy an alternative plan. I wish all the worst for that Festival and I hope that with the time the people can choose whatever other festival to enjoy the artist they want to hear. And if they want to go to Barcelona..don't do It during that weekend! They have to learn that we love music but we're not stupid

Seems like every person who has a negative opinion about that festival, you are always there to say something. If they are paying you, perfect, going on, is your job.. if you are going to play there, perfect, they will pay you relative good and a lot of people are going hear you...but stay concentrated in select good music for the show or preparing your set-up instead of this ''over exposition'' which is not necessary.

Well that didnt happen last year as I went to 5 off sonar parties and there were many more going on. Most cost around 15 euros if I remember rightly. Certainly nothing near the cost of sonar by night! Every year I've been I've gone to off sonar events so there are alternative parties. There were even beach parties last year. I used an organised bus to get me to and from row 14 which is near the airport. It cost me a euro each way. I have also used the free bus service to sonar but not last year. I had no issues with public services and I dont speak spanish. This goes for my friends too. This will be my 4th year in a row. I certainly wouldnt go again if I had a bad time last year. Me and my friends are all looking forward to it. I love barcelona and being able to combine it with hearing good music and some amazing venues makes it the perfect time to visit the city. Imo. Fair enough you haven't enjoyed it but personally I would recommend sonar to anyone.

gotta agree! I have had no experience of this 'conspiracy' and had absolutely no negative experiences last year or any year tbh. I went to plenty of off sonar parties last year, no problems whatsoever. I agree it's changing perhaps not for the best, but lighten up. It's still an amazing spectacle.

Nope I'm not part of the organisation or in any way associated with them. I also don't believe that Sonar is the best thing in the world ever although fair enough it might seem so at times. Basically, in defence of sonar I've said 3 things only in this thread - 1. It's unfair to write it off after only a small part of the line-up is released. 2. It's nothing like Global Gathering. 3. The organisers are not in cahoots with the local government to shut down other parties which go on at the same time. Because if they are they're making a fucking lousy job of it cos there's more parties off-sonar each year. I stand by all of those statements. Question for you: have you ever been involved in attempting to run a party off-sonar that perchance was shut down one year that maybe left a slightly bitter taste in your mouth?

After being fairly blunt, and with a tone of voice which i read as slightly aggressive (was i wrong?) i figured you really were not worth the effort- i just found it "Intriguing"(lol) that another user picked up the same vibe from you.
I stated my PERSONAL reasons in a fairly detailed paragraph(i think)- and the only constructive comment you could come back with was: "Comparing Sonar to a Global Gathering is utter madness. No similarity whatsoever." To me, schoolgirl tactics. trying your hardest to make yourself sound cool without even giving anyone else the chance.
Thats it.Done.Finished with this topic with you neill. I would be more than happy to share my opinions, and thoughts with you on whatever topics you would like, as long as you can be a little more open minded, and a lot more respectful.
Back to the thread- Love Sonar as a festival, No issues with the organisation and fucking great atmosphere. My only disappointment- over the years i felt the music has become a bit more mainstream than what i remember.
PEACE!
