| #0 / Sat, 17 Jan 09 05:13 Don't know if I'm too early for this, but I might as well start a thread pertaining to it now. You know what to do.
Also, for those Facebook nerds on here (I know you're on here) I have just created a DEMF 2009 group.
I'll start off by asking: What DJ's would you like to see perform there? I'll say Ricardo for a start. Boy owes us one, methinks.

Agreed. Usually Detroit DJs and acts are not on mainstage, they are put on a sidestage while a head-liner will be spinning on mainstage. For me, I am quite surprised that the organizers run a contest five months before the festival for artwork/design. The Butcher www.detroitfightclub313.com The Truth Must Be Told......

Detroit Fight Club 313 Posts / 738 RA Since / May 2007 Location / Preparing for battle in the planetary rings of Neptune | #13 / Wed, 04 Feb 09 18:25 Renaissance Marriott is a bit of a walk down to Hart Plaza. It can be a horrible walk if the sun is blazing or if it is rain showers.
For strategic purposes, the Hotel Pontchartrain and DoubleTree are tad closer than Renaissance Marriott and more people hit up these two (2).
No issues as to parking as well for those two (2).
Drunk festival attendees are not that welcome in the Renaissance Marriott as well.
Be forewarned, Detroit will be mad jam-packed that weekend. Festival in downtown and usually a hip-hop concerts each day of the Memorial Weekend as well.

Shoot, I stayed at the Milner last year. Definitely a decent affordable spot, but so far away and very small. Seeing that the Renaissance price was at least somewhat competitive this year, I had to jump on it. And the walk isn't that far to the festival. I plan on drinking all day and night, but I've never been at the point where it's completely obvious that I'm a drunken retard to others. I expect everything to be cool with the folks at the Marriott. Now who's getting VIP tix? I got them last year and thought it was a cool. The free alcohol I got definitely paid for the price. Plus the security at the gate didn't care what you brought in. Admin, I don't know the actual address. Just go to http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dtwdt-detroit-marriott-at-the-renaissance-center/

| #17 / Wed, 04 Feb 09 19:02 Nice, nice...Last year I stayed at the Motor City Hotel and Casino which was awesome. It was a bit far away to Hart Plaza but really only like a 7 dollar cab ride. Plus, the room and rate we got was UNREAL. Massive room, jacuzzi and great service for very cheap. Also, techno + 24 hour gambling was highly entertaining.

Couldn't agree more about the focus on detroit and less moby. One of the main resons I decided not to go last year.
And um, ya, you guys can wish for villalobos all you want but I'm pretty confident in saying he will never play the US. Not sure about legal stuff but hes said in interviews that he has no interest in playing here.

I dunno man.... In order for this event to be a money maker I believe they'll have to bring acts like Moby to attract the general fan. And it's the general fan who will make or break DEMF, so they'll have to "sell out". I mean I remember being in the underground during Terrence Parker's set and coming to the main stage when Moby was playing and the entire bowl was filled body to body and they were loving that shit. His sound I'm indifferent to, but the energy of his set was impressive. I can't hate on that.

I might still "hate" on the fact that moby headlined demf and the fact that artists such as him will headline in the future but I have a hard time arguing your point about selling demf out. Its a shame that anyone would come to demf for moby or that moby would be the dealbreaker for the casual techno/edm fan.

Traditionally, artists aren't booked two yeas in a row. This has been true even for the Belmont 3. I think the only exception is Hawtin for some reason. Paxahau just can't imagine a DEMF without Richie. Hopefully, he will take this year off and focus on a good afterparty. The first Contakt was a farce.

Would love to see Villalobos, Stimming, Guillame and the Coutu Dumonts again, Seth troxler, Reboot, Michal Ho.
The minus crew will probably be there agian this year, I would love to see Barem and Gaiser.
Audion and Mathew Johnson would be nice too.
Adam Beyer would be sweet on the main stage.
And oh so many many more.

Posts / 10 RA Since / Feb 2009 | #36 / Mon, 09 Mar 09 17:43 Well they did the $25 presale last week. I would assume probably $50.
I still think they should leak a significant name or two just to get the buzz going. I jump around a couple of messageboards and there isn't as much talk about this year's event as there was last year. And with Bonnaroo, Mutek, and DEMF being so close (and Bonnaroo already releasing their lineup) they need to stand out from the other two in some way.

You are absolutely right. The catch is that if people can see their favorite artists at Bonnaroo or Mutek, at a cheaper price, then DEMF is going to lose out. Everyone knows that most artists and DJs are going to do ALL THREE (3) if possible. Thus, the question is now......will I have a good time in Detroit or the best time of my life in Montreal or Manchester, Tennesse (700 acres....damn). If Bonnaroo gets more electronic dance music DJs and artists mixed with the hip-hop, rap, rock-n-roll and alternative rock on the bill for next year, then the DEMF will have SERIOUS problems. Wait....that is the same damn formula that Carl Craig and Carol Marvin had with the first DEMF.....gee whiz....go figure that out Pax!!!!

Posts / 91 RA Since / May 2007 Location / Milwaukee | #38 / Mon, 09 Mar 09 21:36 For any newbs heading to detroit, here is a quick summary:
- Festival takes place at Hart Plaza, Downtown Detroit
- Weekend passes have been running in the $45 range, expect a little bump this year which is typical of anything as of late
- Most downtown hotels are relatively close to the festival. Quality can vary drastically - Leland is like a zero star hotel, while the Atheneum is pretty decent. Definitely look on mbs like these for recommendations. (I'm at the Atheneum myself.)
- Keep an eye on the local mb - detroitluv.com for the first word on afterparties and local goings on. (Be forewarned, their community is snarky and viscious so post at your own risk. It is like the Omar S of mb forums, and they don't take too kindly to the joe schmoe tourists.) Very informational though.
- Speaking of after parties, keep your eyes open for pre-sales to some of the more popular ones. The m_nus event always tends to sell out, although from what I heard from last year's event, quality has been dropping in comparison to past parties. If you want in, get tix early.
As for the debate of "Real Detroit" vs "Sellout" - To me this is a non-issue. For the festival to continue and thrive, there will always be a need for the mainstream audience to find a reason to go (last year moby, hopefully this year AFX?) The underground American electronic dance scene is still very much a niche thing. I have participated in detroit festivals in the past that were more underground than over, and musically they were great, but financially it was always the beginning of the end for the festival it seemed. With a balance of mainstream and underground, the show can go on. This is the most important thing. The heads and true fans will have 3-4 stages of excellent underground acts to choose from at any time during the festival - most artists making rare us appearances. The mainstream crowd tends to gravitate towards the moby's, but this is fine as the crowds at the music you want to hear are more educated and allow for more dancing room (Alex Under opposite Moby last year - PLENTY of dancing space to one of the highlight sets for me.) One other positive, is the hope that the ravers who came for Moby, get educated and find the true underground - thus creating a new generation of fans so this music can continue in some form in the US.
This sounds like pretty standard PR from the paxa camp, but I believe this has been working for the benefit of a bigger and better festival just in the past few years.
Keep hating if you must, but as a music fan, I am completely content with this setup as long as the true underground continues to get served.
(If paxahau foolishly changes course on their current booking policy, then I guess its off to Mutek every year instead, but I have faith this format will continue.)
